Name: Kat Waters
Age: 28
I live in: Auckland, Nuova Zelanda
1.What do you do for a living?
I am a digital marketing manager by day, and I teach sewing classes in the evenings!
2. Dream in the drawer?
I’d love to make a living at sewing somehow! That idea is definitely still evolving, though – I’m not sure what it will look like.
3. How do you imagine yourself in 20 years?
I imagine I’ll still be making things – hopefully in a sewing room that is a bit bigger than my current setup! Life is full of surprises though, so I’m mostly just curious to see what those years bring! 6 years ago, if you told me I’d be living in New Zealand now, I definitely would not have believed it.
4. If you look carefully at yourself in the mirror, what do you see?
I see a lot of confidence that wasn’t there a few years ago. I also, for better or worse, tend to analyze fit adjustments I might need to make to future clothing items whenever I see them in the mirror. The nice thing about sewing for yourself, though, is that everything I see is an adjustment I want to make to my clothes, not one I want to make to my body.
5. The worse moment of your life?
I can’t think of a stand-out worst moment.
6. And the best?
The day I got married is definitely up there for best moments though!
7. Looking your Instagram profile, it’s immediately evident that you are a whimsical and creative person. Have you always been in this way?
I think I have! Everyone in my family is very creative, so it was always around me growing up. My Mom made quilts, which is how I learned to sew, and Dad likes woodworking, which I’ve done a bit of as well.
8. The 3 favorite songs?
It’s so hard to choose just three! I think, Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson
any Panic! at the Disco song
and Downtown by Macklemore – the last one’s a bit odd but it was the song that was playing at our wedding when I finally got Jon to come and dance with me, and I remember how silly that was whenever I hear it.
9. Do you believe in God?
I believe in the importance of fostering communities.
10. What do you think while creating your works?
Where did the inspiration come from? I think all my favourite projects are inspired by something I need or want, rather than some external source. Right now, I’m thinking I’d like to make a very warm knee-length coat with big pockets and a belt – so I’ll work on fleshing out the details until I’m ready to start. Sometimes inspiration comes from things I see out in the world, or from fabric in shops, or Pinterest: I love Pinterest for filing away little details I might use later!
11. What is your way to release tension?
I’m a maker – I always want to have something in my hands. If it’s been a long day and I need to have some calm time in the evening, I usually have a sock to knit or an easy embroidery or handwork project I can work on.
12. What do you think about the place where you live?
I love Auckland! This is the first big city I’ve ever lived in, and although I certainly don’t want to live within sneezing distance of my neighbours forever, the city has its perks. I can walk to 4 different fabric stores, and there are so many delightful places I’m still discovering. We’re also never far away from the ocean, which I’ve never had before. I love stand up paddleboarding, which Auckland is perfect for with its diverse coastlines, and there are also so many places to hike and escape the city, which are pretty easy to get to! There are also so many different kinds of people here, with so many different backgrounds. You don’t get that sort of thing in the midwestern US where I’m from.
13. Who are your favorite fashion designer?
I’ll confess I don’t keep up with fashion very intently – I prefer to sew what I like, despite the trends. That said, the inner workings of Dior garments are positively engineering marvels, and I draw from their construction each time I make a couture gown.
14. What do you think about Italy?
I’d love to visit someday! It’s unfortunately a bit of a mission to get to anywhere in Europe from New Zealand, but one day I’ll visit!
15. What do people tell you about your pink hair?
People are always very curious to know how I keep it so pink. I really don’t have that many negative interactions. Children think it’s awesome, of course, and I recently had an older lady come up to me in the supermarket and say “You look like you’re loads of fun!” – I suspect she would have been surprised if she knew my Friday night plans included sewing and knitting!
16. Where do you go to feel at peace with yourself?
I think the biggest thing that moving to another country will teach you is that your home – and your peace – is whatever you make it. I find great satisfaction in my sewing corner – small as it is -because I have created that space for myself, but also out on my paddleboard, and in nature in general.
17. What was your greatest satisfaction in your work? And the hardest moment?
I love problem solving, so I think my greatest moments will always be the times when things that had a very good chance of failure suddenly start to succeed, and the hard moments are when I can’t come up with a solution to a problem.
18. Favorite movie?
I don’t think I can choose a favorite – most times if I’m watching a movie I’m also working on a project so I prefer simpler plots that I can follow without having to pay constant attention to the screen. I am pretty partial to the original Avengers movie, though.
19. Are you optimistic or pessimistic?
I’d like to think I’m an optimist most of the time, but not every day is conducive to that kind of mentality! Sometimes you just have to be grumpy at a project for a little while before things start to turn around.
20. What is the thing that makes you more angry?
Hah! My super strange pet peeve is that I can’t stand sounds coming from two places: If the TV is on there cannot also be music, if someone’s talking on the phone the music has to be turned off, etc. I do not understand how this does not bother some people!
21. Who is the person who gives you more help in your life?
My partner is my main support, but also my parents of course! Mom let me take over her sewing room when I was younger so that I could work on my projects, and now Jon has let me do the same thing with a rather large percentage of our joint living space, in a very small apartment.
22. The best place you ever seen?
I love exploring new places! Auckland must be a top contender since I came here and haven’t left, but I think every new place I go is the new best place.. By that logic, the next best place is somewhere I haven’t yet been.
23. Have you ever made or received a surprise?
I love making gifts for people, but I really don’t enjoy surprises all that much. I would much prefer to know what’s going on. Since I don’t particularly like them, I don’t often orchestrate surprises for other people either. Gifts though, definitely!
24. When was the last time you thought “I’m a lucky and happy person”?
I think that every day! I’m in a very privileged position at the moment to have as much time and energy to spend on my sewing practice as I do.
25. If you could talk for an hour with a person of your choice in the world (living or not), who would you choose?
I’ve been thinking about this question for about a week and I really don’t know who I’d pick. I find that the answers to the questions you most desperately want to know come from places you’d least expect, so choosing a person specifically doesn’t often result in finding what you’re looking for
